Notes

  1. Subject-words in sentences 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 are plural (बहुवचन). Accordingly the verbs are also plural.
  2. In sentence #3 the word विविधाः is adjective of वृक्षाः. The rule is that if a noun is plural, its adjective shall also be plural. The noun वृक्षाः is of masculine gender (पुँल्लिङ्ग), the adjective विविधाः is also of masculine gender.
    1. In sentence #7 also, मधुराणि is adjective of फलानि. Hence both are plural. फलानि is of neuter gender (नपुंसकलिङ्ग). मधुराणि is also of neuter gender.
  3. The word केचन (= some) in sentences 4 and 5 has the suffix चन. There are special rules for use of चन. They are better explained in texts later than the present बालबोध-level.
  4. The words तेषु in sentence #6, वृक्षेषु in sentence #8 and उपवनेषु in sentence #11 are plural and are in seventh case (in, at, on, upon) सप्तमी विभक्ति. The word उद्याने (in the garden) in sentence #16 is also in seventh case, but is singular.
  5. In sentence #9 the subject-words अनेके पक्षिणः are plural.
    1. Of these, the form अनेके is similar to the form ते (= They) in sentence #10.
    2. The word पक्षिणः is plural of पक्षी. This form will be explained in texts later than the present बालबोध-level.
